Hario Skerton Manual Coffee Grinder Review

As a barista, I had the chance to work with plenty of equipment and teste them while trying to make the best coffee I could do. One day because the main brew coffee grinder was broke, we had to use the Hario Skerton coffee grinder. I must admit that wasn’t easy to grind around 30 times that day and I felt stronger after that.

Yes, it is taking several minutes to grind the coffee for a Chemex or V60, but the consistency was over average during all that day. I was impressed by the quality of Hario Skerton grinder. If you are interested in buying this manual coffee grinder, let me help you decide if this grinder is right for you or not. You can also check the price of the Hario Skerton coffee grinder below.

The Feel In My Hands

When I used for the first time this Hario coffee grinder, I had a nice feeling when I hold it in my hands. I like to feel the weight of the tool I use, but I don’t want to be too heavy. In this case, the Skerton felt very balanced in my hand. The rubber band give a plus of safety when holding and does not let the grinder slip while using.

Is Hario Skerton Easy To Use?

To use the Skerton manual coffee grinder is not rocket science. To set up the grinding size simply undo the top screw, rotate the adjustable wheel either clockwise or anti-clockwise depending on the desired grind, pop the screw back on and you’re ready to go.

It is a bit annoying when you want to use different methods of brewing. When you have to change the grinding size to suit different brewing methods will be incredibly frustrating because you don’t have any guideline. You need to change the size and then test to see if is the right grinding size. In the end, you lose a lot of coffee and time to find the best settings again. But if you will use this grinder just for one brew method this kind of problems will not apply to you.

Hario Skerton Performances

One of the things I like on this manual coffee grinder is the high Japanese quality ceramic burr. This ceramic burr provides nice and even grinding size especially for espresso, V60, and Chemex brew method. One issue I had with this coffee grinder is the leak of consistency on coarser grinding settings. For example, if you want to grind for french press, the grounds size won’t be equal, and the taste of coffee will be affected. This problem is solved on Hario Skerton Pro coffee grinder.

Another thing that I like is the high capacity of this grinder. If you are interested in brewing large batches of coffee, this grinder will help you a lot. You can easily fit 70g-100g of coffee beans, depending on the coffee beans size.

Is This Hario Coffee Grinder Suitable For Traveling?

I will say no. The Hario Skerton is a nice manual coffee grinder for home users, but having in mind that size it has, I would not get this grinder with me while I travel. I would take the Hario Mini Mill Slim coffee grinder, but this is another story. You can check the price for Hario Mini Mill Slim below.

Overall Impressions

Without no doubt, Hario is making one of the best gears for coffee lovers, and the Skerton manual coffee grinder is not an exception. But, the first series of grinders had some issues here and there as I pointed out in this post. The lack of consistency on courser grinding settings is the one of the main complains all the customers had.

If you are on a budget and you want a high capacity grinder, I recommend this Hario Skerton coffee grinder. If you are not on a budget and you still desire a manual coffee grinder, I highly recommend the new Hario Skerton Pro. This new series of Hario coffee grinders had improved a lot all the issues the older version had. Now you can get more consistancy even on coarser grinding settings.

If you want something smaller, I recommend you to buy the Hario Mini Mill coffee grinder. You can grind about 25-30g of coffee beans, but you get more consistency and a lower price.
